I’ve decided that during the month of May I will only take photos in manual mode. With a digital camera, I usually use aperture priority or shutter priority semi-auto mode. I also often use evaluative (matrix) metering. To get better at taking film photos, I’m going to set my digital camera to operate as closely as a fully manual film camera as possible. This means full manual, and center-weighted metering. In other words, I’m going back to the ’70s when photography was simpler, except that I’ll have the advantage of instant replay on my photos so I can adjust and re-take if needed. I think that having instant replay makes learning faster, but having auto and semi-auto modes makes learning slower.
